Western Turf Seeds, Blends and Mixes

We select seed blends and mixes that have the highest disease resistance, hot and cold weather tolerance, and those that require less water. If you would like to have the percentages of each seed type, please call the office and we will be happy to either fax or mail the information to you.

We have supplied some of the features and advantages of our different mixes and blends to assist you in choosing the most appropriate sod type for your customer.

Turf Selection
In terms of types of grass, we live in a "cool season" area. Most "warm season" grasses perform marginally here and many won't survive at all. Traditionally, Kentucky bluegrass has been the top performer in most all aspects, but it has also been the target of ridicule for its seemingly high water requirements. Unfortunately, the foremost reasons for this observation stem from the fact that Kentucky bluegrass is by far the most popular cool season grass and the fact that studies have found that most people water their lawns four times more than actually needed by the plant.

Today's new improved varieties offer the characteristic of lower water regimens along with increased tolerances to hot and cold extremes, higher disease resistance, lower mowing heights (for those who like a closely-cropped lawn) and better color and texture.

Perennial ryegrass and new generation dwarf fescues (of the tall fescue family) make up the other cool season grasses that do well in our area. These grasses can be grown alone but are usually found in blends or mixes. Typically, Perennial ryegrass is finer textured than Kentucky bluegrass, greens up about a month sooner in the spring, but doesn't like temperatures above 85 degrees very much. Dwarf fescues are a heavier-bodied grass that is very deep rooting, thus giving it better drought tolerance than the other cool season grasses. It has better traffic durability than the other cool season grasses. In our Blue/Fescue mix we use special varieties of Kentucky bluegrass that assist with the mending but will not take over the fescue plants.

All of our seed varieties are specially selected for the soils and climate in our region. We spend considerable time and money buying the best and we test grow them before they go to market.

We have experimented with buffalo grass and some newer "so called" low water use varieties, but we have not found a product we can stand behind and guarantee for our customers. We keep trying anything new, though, so we are always on the cutting edge.

Western Turf was the first grower in this area to introduce Kentucky bluegrass/perennial ryegrass mixes; the first to introduce the new generation tall fescues; the first to introduce the new dwarf fescues; and the first to introduce the new technology and harvesting techniques of Big Roll Sod.

Big Roll Sod
Big Roll Sod offers tremendous savings in installation labor, fewer seams, meaning quicker use and overall savings from start to completion. Using Big Rolls, a small crew can install the same square footage as a large crew using small rolls.

Our rolls are 30 inches wide by 80 feet long. Our local competitors use roll widths of 21 inches and 24 inches. Our reason for using wider rolls is to have fewer seams. Fewer seams require less labor, make a better looking job and make the field ready for use sooner.

How We Cut It
Interestingly, there are a whole lot of ways to cut and harvest sod. We have:

  • Standard rolls 10 square feet
  • Big rolls 200 square feet

Western Blue Derby
Known for its dark, rich color, fine texture, lush appearance, cold and heat stress tolerance and the ability to heal itself quite quickly with beneficial Rhizomes, Western Blue Derby is ideal for medium to high traffic areas such as home lawns, athletic fields, parks and golf courses. Western Blue Derby has a high disease tolerance with the ability to crowd out weeds and other competitive plants. This sod also has a greater turf density and improved shade tolerance.

Oasis Blue Fescue
Western Turf has improved our blue fescue mix by adding new tall fescue with beneficial rhizomes! This allows for quick fill-in and repair. The texture is finer and more dense for better mobility and "true" ball play on athletic fields or home lawns. Its aggressive, deep-rooting system (8 to 10 feet) mines more of the sub-surface water, allowing for 20% to 40% less water usage than evapotranspiration (ETO). Oasis is a multi-culture mix of top-performing varieties giving Oasis greater durability and longevity. This grass is ideal for high traffic, large animals and for those areas with lower maintenance needs.
