Paver EZ Installation Guide
Laying pavers:
If your design has a Soldier course, lay this first leaving one side open, Curved side if there is one. Begin laying the rest of your pattern inside the body of the Soldier Course at a 90 degree corner. Work out from there keeping straight lines.
Place pavers straight down the edge of the adjacent paver. You do not want to disturb the level of the sand. Using a level and string, periodically check to make sure pavers are level and straight.
The pavers you have installed will hold your weight as you work out, make sure not stand to close to the edge of the pavers you have installed so you do not disturb the sand.
Lay all the whole pavers you can, keeping straight lines as close to the edge as possible, then go back and cut the pavers to the appropriate size to fit the edge correctly.
The easiest way to mark pavers for cutting, especially on a curved edge where all body pavers will need to be cut is to take a 'quick draw' and set the opening to the same size as the paver used in the Soldier course. Place the guide on the edge restraint and mark the body pavers as you trace the edge. You can also take a paver used in the Soldier course to use as a ruler by placing the paver on top of the body pavers and using the edging as your guide, mark the cuts.
It is very important to go back and mark the side of the pavers that will be cut off and disposed of. This is typically done with an X.
Cut pavers using a guillotine cutter or a masonry saw (both are available at equipment rental shops). If possible do not use pieces smaller than 25% of the whole paver.
After all pavers have been placed, sweep the area and run a plate compactor over the pavers starting with the outside edges first and making circles around the pavers work your way to the middle, make 2 to 3 passes. This is done to ensure they are properly pressed in the sand.
Depending on the type of paver you choose, pick the appropriate joint sand to use. Fill the joint between the pavers by pouring sand on top of the pavers and sweeping the sand in the joints until they are completely full. Run the plate compactor over the pavers while another person sweeps sand over the joints. The vibration will compact the sand ensuring the joints are completely full with compacted sand. Continue this process until the sand in the joints can not be pushed down.
Sweep the remaining sand off of the pavers. Depending on the sand used water may be needed to activate the sand, in this case allow 2 to 3 days for joints to dry.
Go back to the 6 to 12 inch base extension and fill in this area with back dirt and compact down. Fill the area back with sod or your preferred ground cover. Water appropriately to ensure proper rooting.
Your paver project is now complete! Relax and enjoy.
