Western Turf Grass Guide

Due to our severe climate, the best choices for our high desert and sierra region are cool season grasses. These are our most successful varieties and blends:
  • Kentucky Bluegrass - Known for its dark. rich color, fine texture, lush appearance, cold and heat stress tolerance and the ability to heal itself quite quickly, Kentucky gluegrass is ideal for medium to high use areas such as home lawns, athletic fields, parks and golf courses. It offers improved disease tolerance, greater turf density and imporoved shade tolerance.
  • Kentucky Bluegrass/Perennial Rye Grass (blue/rye) - Also known for dark green color and fine texture, Ryegrass mixes well with bluegrass to keep your grass greener about a month longer during the year. It grows a bit faster and establishes quickly in all soil types. Growth slows in warmer months and thrives in cooler months.
  • Kentucky Bluegrass/Dwarf Fescue (blue/fescue) - Known for its drought tolerance because of its extensive root system. Blue/fescue is a self-repairing grass that requires less water and fertilizer than the other sod types, has a high wear tolerance, slower growing and high heat tolerance. Ideal for home lawns with animals, areas that need low maintenance and for those who like a denser turf.
